Thread count, explained

Higher isn't always better.

4 min read

Thread count is the number of threads in a square inch of fabric. It's only one part of quality.

Good to know

  • Quality fiber and weave matter more than a huge number
  • Many good cotton sheets fall roughly between 200 and 600
  • Very high counts can be made with thin, twisted threads
  • Linen and flannel are judged by weight, not thread count
  • Touch and fabric content tell you more
